I Love pallets!
They are free and very versatile. They can be repurposed to build anything you want. With pallets, you can create home furniture's for practically free.
There's just one problem:
It's hard to find good guides, tutorials, plans, or instructions on how to build something with pallet. There's absolutely nothing in books or magazines, and you have to dig deep all over the internet to find the one you need.
That's why I created this article.
I've collected more than 100 pallet projects that have detailed step-by-step tutorials or at least a series of images so you can follow along and build one yourself.
Alright, let's dive right in!
...two things before we start
Before we get started, there are two things I have to tell you. First, where you can get these pallets for free and, second, which ones are safe to use for DIY projects.
How to Get Free Pallets
You can often call small businesses around your area. Usually they have to pay a company to come get the pallets for them so they can be disposed of. If you come get them you save that company money so a lot of times they’ll just give them to you.
It is also wise to checks sites like local yard sale pages and Craigslist. People will often advertise if they have pallets that need to be disposed of in hopes that someone will come get them.
Here's where/how you can get pallets for free:
- Small business (hardware store, pet supplies store, furniture store)
- Newspaper companies
- Construction site
- New business openings
- Craigslist
Make sure to ask someone first before taking pallets, even if you find them on a dumpster.
Determining If Your Pallets are Safe
Not all pallets are safe to use for DIY projects, most of them are not. It's because the woods are treated with harmful chemicals. So to make sure your pallets are safe to use, follow these steps:
1. Pallet Headboard
This is actually an idea I want to do in my own bedroom. I love the rustic touch it adds to any room. But it also adds a little touch of elegance too.
2. The King Size Pallet Bed
Need a new bed? But you don’t have a lot of money? No worries. This pallet bed has got you covered. It also can offer you a ton of room.
3. The Pallet Accent Wall
I’m in love with this wall. I love accent walls anyway but with pallets it adds a beautiful rustic feel. Again, this is another idea I hope to duplicate in my own home one day.
4. The Pallet Bar
Need a man space in your basement? But don’t want to spend a fortune on the bar? That’s okay. This pallet bar is beautiful and since it is made from pallets your expenses should drop drastically.
5. The Pallet Coffee Table
I not only love how unique this coffee table is, but I also love the fact that it has a hidden nook under it to hide magazines and books. For people that despise clutter (like myself) this is a great feature.
6. The Pallet Desk
Oh my! My jaw just dropped seeing this beautiful desk. It is a rustic beauty that offers a ton of space, too. My wish list just keeps getting longer.
7. Pallet Sofa With Storage
This is not only a really cute love seat that can be made very easily and for little expense. But it also has great little slats in the back meant to store smaller items while not in use. Multipurpose and easy on the eye. Sounds great!
8. Outdoor Pallet Sectional Sofa
I’ve always loved this idea. It has floated around in a few different designs on multiple sites. The fact that you can a large outdoor couch with tables, all handmade from pallets. That is a splendid idea.
9. Welcome Sign
This sign is very cute. You can paint your family’s name and year you were established on it. You could also put something as simple as ‘Welcome.’ Either way, it will catch your guests’ eyes.
10. Free Pallet Fence
This was one of my first posts here on Morning Chores. We have built many free fences and some really adorable gates, all from pallets, and all basically free.
11. Rustic Sofa
I love this rustic sofa. They obviously create it out of pallets. But it was taken one step further. They made cushions from old burlap bags. Along with really cute pillows too. It just ties everything together.
12. Pallet Adirondack Chair
I love Adirondack chairs. They are super comfortable. The fact that one can be made out of pallets just makes it that much better in my book.
13. Pallet Outdoor Sofa
So if you like the rustic look, aren’t afraid to build something yourself, and want to save money then this outdoor furniture is probably for you. It fits into all of those categories and would be a great addition to almost any outdoor space.
14. Pallet Kids Bookshelves
I love these. I’m actually in need of more storage in one of my boys’ rooms. This looks like it would be a great option and very affordable too.
15. Pallet Herb Garden
This is beautiful. If you are someone that can grow herbs in versatile situations then I encourage you to do this (and send me pics.) If I don’t stick the herbs in a pot or in the ground, mine just won’t grow.
16. The Pallet Photography Backdrop
Are you a photographer? If so, just know I’m jealous. That is such a gift to have. So if you need an inexpensive backdrop to use for a rustic setting this one is a beautiful choice.
17. A Pallet Swing Bed
Do you not just love lazy days? Well, if you had this swing you would have a lot more of them. No doubt about it. It is very inviting to say the least.
18. Pallet Bar Stools
Need some bar stools to go along with your pallet bar? Well, these would certainly do the trick. They are unique and can be as colorful or basic as you wish.
19. Pallet Clock
This is a very unique clock. It doesn’t take much to put it together but it certainly would be a conversational piece.
20. Pallet Desk
This desk could work for both working or as a craft station. I love the drawer area under the bottom side of the desk. It is a very versatile piece.
21. The Rustic Cooler Stand
This is an awesome cooler. If you like to entertain a lot during the warmer summer months then this would be a great addition to your outdoor décor.
22. Storage Chest
I still have ‘trunks’ (as they were once called) that belonged to my grandmothers when they became new brides. They are great for storing all kinds of things while beautifully hiding whatever is inside.
23. Pallet Patio Furniture
This is an amazing patio set. The best part is you can make it fit your style with whatever color choice you make. But it looks like it is waiting for lots of summer guests.
24. Rustic Picture Frame
My mom just had my very first published article framed in something similar to this. The upside for you is that you can have the very same, beautiful look for practically no cost.
25. Kitchen Island
If you don’t have a kitchen island, I promise you, you would love one. It is great storage and also give you ample amount of space to prepare food for your family. This would be a beautiful addition to any kitchen.
26. Chalkboard Easel
If you have a little one, they would love this pallet project. But if you also like cute ways to leave notes within your home, or if you own your own business this would be great to display daily specials and sales too.
27. Pallet Porch Swing
If you live in the south, you probably were raised with a porch swing. I don’t have one…yet. But I’m certainly planning on it in the future. This is a beautiful option for one. Oh, the memories that are made while swinging in a porch swing.
28. Hall Table
If you have an entry way in your home, you might like to have a small table there. It is great to display family photos and also is a great place to lay your keys and mail as you come through the door each day.
29. Entertainment Center
This is the ‘Mack daddy’ of entertainment centers. It has lots of great storage while also adding a rustic touch to the room. I know my husband would be proud to have this beneath his TV.
30. TV Stand
This TV stand is very useful if you have a normal size TV. I know a lot of homes compete with the cinemas on TV sizes, but for the rest of us, this could be a great option to have a free stand that is nice to look at too.
31. Wine Rack
I live in wine country with tons of vineyards. If you are a wine fanatic then this wine rack will probably be right up your alley. It gives ample room for multiple bottles and glasses too.
32. The Pallet Swimming Pool
Summer in the south has arrived. This pool looks wonderful and seems to be within most people’s budget. Not to mention, it is beautiful.
33. Trash Bin
This is another item added to my wish list. I hate having an ugly trashcan sitting around in my kitchen. This would certainly fix that problem.
34. Pallet Mirror Frame
Do you have a remodel project on your hands? Me too. My house is constantly being remodeled. So any cool, rustic feature I can add that is budget-friendly is right up my alley.
35. Rustic Pallet Cabinet
This cabinet is beautiful. You could make multiples and have new kitchen cabinets. Or just use the one and use for daily storage.
36. Pallet American Flag
These are great. We actually have one. They are not only great décor for patriotic holidays (or even everyday use), but they are also great to sell. They are very popular around our area.
37. Dog Bed
Do you have a four-legged friend that would love to have their own space in your home? Well this dog bed is a beautiful addition that any dog would be proud to call their own.
38. Pallet Dog House
This is a great dog house for a smaller dog. It seems very easy to build and pretty too. Any smaller dog would be happy to have this as their very own.
39. Sliding Barn Door
This is a beautiful feature in any home. It would make a unique closet or bathroom door. Or even as a room divider.
40. Dining Table
In need of a dining room table? Maybe you are short on cash or maybe you just want something different? Either way, this table could quite possibly be your answer.
41. Reading Nook
Do you have a little reader on your hands? What better way to encourage that then by giving them their very own space to enjoy their books? This space is super inviting and most children would love it.
42. A Pallet Play House
Okay, if you can round up the pallets and have the carpentry skills I say do this project. Most little girls dream of having a play house like this very one. Not to mention, do you know how much you could save?
43. Pallet Picnic Table
This picnic table is beautiful. I would love to have it in my backyard to enjoy a fresh meal on a summer day. Wouldn’t you?
44. Serving Tray
This serving tray is another gorgeous project. It would be useful to serve your friends out on the back porch during warmer months; breakfast in bed on special occasions; or even to serve the ones you love on a sick day.
45. Sofa Table
This is a unique piece as it is meant to go along with a sofa. Maybe one of the beautiful sofas mentioned above? Either way, it would be a very useful piece of furniture to have on hand and gorgeous to boot.
46. Mason Jar Chandelier
So if you’ve read this blog very much you know I love pallets and mason jars. This is the perfect mixture and something I hope to one day have in my kitchen. Join me in the dream or better yet, build it and send me pictures.
47. Pallet Planter Boxes
I need these planter boxes. They are beautiful and would certainly fit into the rustic feel around my house. Not to mention, I had a slight flower disaster with the flowers on our perimeter fence this year. But that is a story for another day.
48. Pallet Flooring
Need some inexpensive flooring? Well, you don’t get much cheaper or durable than pallets. It is absolutely beautiful and an idea I have contemplated many times.
49. The Pallet Gate
This is a beautiful pallet gate. Remember how I mentioned above how we have used pallets to build some beautiful gates around our property? Well, they do have a way of making some absolutely gorgeous necessities.
50. Radiator Cover
If you have radiant heat then you might love this cover. It gives it a subtle decorated touch and shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg either.
51. Pallet End Table
I love the look of these end tables. They are modern yet rustic. It also appears that could just slide right into any living room and serve their purpose beautifully.
52. Rocking Chair
This rocking chair is beautiful, appears sturdy, and I love the wood. If you have a front porch that is screaming for a rocking chair to sit on it and rock then this could be it, friends.
53. Ramp
Do you have someone near to you that is disabled? Me too. And a lot of the expenses that come along with disabilities are mind boggling. Well, here is a way to meet the need for a ramp while leaving the cost in the dust.
54. Pallet Dresser
I think this pallet dresser is stunning. It would work great for a child or an adult. The storage appears to be plenty but above all I love the clean, rustic look of it.
55. The Hidden Pallet Ottoman
So maybe you aren’t like me. You don’t love rustic, wood, or pallets. That’s okay. I’ll forgive you and also offer you a beautiful ottoman design that doesn’t even look like it came from pallets.
56. Pallet Nightstand
Let’s just assume I could build all of my furniture from pallets and be happy. This nightstand would be no exception. It is beautiful and even has a little flare to the design with the heart shape carved in it.
57. Towel Rack
A towel rack is a great addition to any home. Whether you need in your bathroom or (if you are so lucky to have an outdoor shower for all of you beach goers) it would be a great addition there too.
58. Pallet Raft
This looks like something our oldest would love to build and enjoy at the lake this summer. Talk about floating in style.
59. Pallet Herb Garden
This herb garden would be a beautiful addition to a patio space. Again, for all of you lucky folks that can grow herbs in pallets, you should do it. Nothing like natural beauty for décor.
60. The Pallet Barn
This barn is absolutely beautiful. It would work great for storage but also add a rustic touch to the property.
61. The Room Divider
Do you live in a small space? Need to make some extra room without adding square footage? Well, this room divider is a great way of accomplishing that. It would fit in well in most any home décor too.
62. Homemade Futon Frame
Futons are awesome little creations that can double as a couch or bed. If you have a compact living space they are life savers. So why not create your own with pallets you’ve collected? It is one piece of furniture that will certainly come in handy.
63. Jewelry Holder
As a woman, let me just say that this would be an amazing gift to receive. I have a little jewelry box but it is so hard to find what you are looking for (especially when in a hurry.) If you had this outstanding pallet jewelry holder, you probably would never have that problem again.
64. A Pallet House
I’m not sure how many people have ever really considered building a home from pallets, but they should. After seeing this economical and quite attractive structure, I think pallets deserve a second glance and consideration as a building material.
65. Shoe Rack
If you have a lot of people in your home (or maybe just a lot of shoes) then this shoe rack will certainly come in hand. I do have a lot of people in my home and the front door can easily become cluttered. Neat organizational structures like this one could certainly add some ease to my life.
66. The Shoe Hanger
Where has this been my whole life? Seriously! What better organization can you ask for then a place to hang your shoes at eye level? And it is basically free to build.
67. A Decorative Heart
To me a heart says ‘country charm.’ It is very welcoming and has a quaint rustic touch to it. You guessed it. This is another piece I’m in love with and would love to have in my own home.
68. Bath Cabinet
Do you need a little extra storage in your bathroom? Our guest bathroom has the exact same problem. Being able to build your own pallet bath cabinet is a very economical way to fulfill that need for storage. It also adds a unique touch that only your home will have.
69. Work Bench/Potting Station
This work bench can also double as a potting station. It has a very basic design which is a good thing. You don’t always want your work spaces to stand out as such (especially when they aren’t in use.)
70. The Pallet Walkway
Do you have a walking space that often gets muddy? We do too. It is heading right into our garden. You know what would fix that? This beautiful pallet walkway. You would just need to be careful during periods of rain as it looks like it could become very slick.
71. A Map
Are you someone that loves to decorate with maps of the world and globes? I’ve known quite a few people that do that. Well, if you are in that category this map made from a pallet is something you are probably going to love.
72. Laundry Basket Holder
I need this laundry basket holder in my life. And quickly. Anyone who washes the amount of clothes that I do in a week needs something to help them stay organized. This would be a great, inexpensive way to accomplish that.
73. Bike Rack
If you ride bikes and need a place to store them this would be a very compact way to do that. What I love the most about this bike rack is the simplicity of the design. It looks like something even an amateur could build and be successful with it.
74. Potting Bench
I’ve found is that planting flowers often times takes hours. Staying bent over or in an uncomfortable sitting position for long periods becomes uncomfortable and quickly. Potting benches help a lot in those situations.
75. Lounge Tree Swing
This swing looks so inviting. How could you not just want to climb up in it, rest, and swing all day long? It is also very appealing to the eye. This would be a great addition to any front yard.
76. A Pallet Shelf
This shelf is meant to display things more than it is supposed to be functional for storage. However, you might have a few items you could store on it. If not, it would make great décor and a great way to display items that mean a lot to you.
77. Woodworking Table
My grandfather was a wood worker. He could build pretty much anything, but his specialty was clocks. I love this table because it reminds me a lot of his. Considering he built many things on it, I feel certain this table could meet the needs of most woodworkers.
78. Pallet Spice Rack
Spices are one of the hardest things for me to keep organized in my kitchen. The reason is because I have so many. This spice rack would certainly help keep things organized and less cluttered.
79. Pallet Ceiling
My first response when I came across this ceiling was, “Oh wow!” It is absolutely gorgeous. And I’m not really sure how you would find a more breathtaking ceiling for as little cost as this one.
80. Bookshelf
I’ll admit it. I’m a bookworm. I love to read and unfortunately, that means I collect a ton of books. With a bookshelf like this one though I wouldn’t have to worry about storing my books in a stylish manner.
81. Pallet Coffee Table
This coffee table has a great amount of storage, and it would also be a great look in a more modern setting or a vintage setting as well. The best part, it can be made for practically nothing.
82. The Pallet Horse
Do you have a little one? Well, this toy would certainly make their day. A little pull along horse that can be made on the cheap sounds like a dream come true to most any parent.
83. Utensil Box
I have a stainless steel utensil holder, and I really want to trade it in for this one. This is not only a very useful item but it also would fit in to most any kitchen and be easy to keep clean. That is a win/win in my house.
84. Patio Bar
Do you have a small space for entertaining? Well, don’t fret. This creative little patio bar will fit in most any area. Not only will it help spice up your entertaining area but the free price tag isn’t so bad either.
85. The Murphy Desk
I actually have a murphy desk that my husband made for me. I love it! It is never in the way and is a great place for me to write. This murphy desk can accomplish those same qualities for you too. Give it a try. You’ll probably love it.
86. The Corner Desk
Need a little larger work space? No fears. Pallets can also be used to make this delectable corner desk. With its rustic appearance and style meant to be tucked away in a corner, it would certainly still catch quite a few eyes.
87. Pallet Sofa
Do you have a space outdoors that you’d love to use for entertaining? Well, don’t let the outrageous price of patio furniture deter you from that dream. Instead, create this pallet sofa and your guests will surely flock.
88. Paracord Hanging Chair
I’ll be truthful, I have never quite seen a chair like this one before. But it sure looks relaxing. So if you are needing a quiet space around your home to relax, this little ditty right here can certainly help you with that.
89. The Rolling Coffee Table
I love this little coffee table. It is a little smaller than some mentioned previously but not everyone loves a huge coffee table. To make it that much sweeter, it has been put on wheels, and they monogrammed it. Anything monogrammed, and I automatically love it.
90. ‘Give Thanks’ Sign
This is a great decorative sign. You could actually make it to say anything you wanted. In this instance they used it as a great reminder during the Thanksgiving holiday. It looks easy enough to make but also is an eye-catcher.
91. An Every Day Sign
I love this sign. Again, you could make it to say anything, but I think the wording is a great reminder for daily use. It just requires a few stencils, some pallets, and some paint. Doesn’t get much easier (or cheaper) for home décor.
92. Shark Art
If you are a beach goer or maybe just have a little one that loves sea creatures, this would be an inexpensive way to decorate. Considering I hope to someday own a beach house, this is definitely something going in my decorative files.
93. Pallet Christmas Tree
This is a great way to decorate inexpensively for Christmas. You just use the slats from pallets to make the tree branches. Then add a few decorative lights. It would be great for most entry ways. So go ahead, get a jump start on creating this year’s Christmas decorations.
94. A Tea Light Christmas Tree
Christmas trees are expensive. So if you don’t want to pay the price but still want to use one in the celebrations, use this one. You create a winding Christmas trees and then set LED tea lights on the branches. Doesn’t get much easier than that.
95. Mason Jar Vase
I love this piece as a welcome sign. It is very simple and easy to maintain. I also love the fact that it can be very versatile. If you aren’t a fan of chevron, you could make it with any design to fit your personal taste.
96. Whale Art
Okay, so I just said one day I hope to own a beach house. This piece would certainly go in it. I love how it is designed and the painting just makes it pop. Again, another one I will definitely store for later decorative use.
97. Kid’s Workbench
If you have a small child that likes to work on things, why not give them their own work space? I know my boys would love this. Fill it with some pretend tools and a few items they can tinker with, and you have a very inexpensive Christmas or birthday gift.
98. Pallet Coasters
Man, do I need these in my house. If you have children (or a husband that is forgetful like kids can be) then you probably either have a thousand rings on your tables or little coasters like these sitting around everywhere. I love the simple design and think that they will become the newest part of my home décor, very soon.
99. Pallet Picture Frames
I absolutely love these picture frames. I also love the directions to make photo transfers onto them. If you have a rustic home décor style like I do then these would fit wonderfully into your home.
100. Pallet Scarecrow
Oh, I love fall. I love decorating for fall that much more. This is absolutely adorable and seems so easy to make. If you want to go with something a little different besides the straw bales and pumpkins this year, this might be it.
101. Raised Planting Beds
I love raised garden beds. They are great at keeping the property organized and are a little easier on your back when planting and tending. Need to create a snazzy looking one on the cheap? This one might be what you’ve been looking for.
102. Wooden Cabinet
I love cabinets like these (and actually use one in my kitchen) to help store some of the canned goods I can every year. It is great because it is open and makes it easier to see what you have on hand.
103. Eco-Rustic Bookshelves
I’ve already confessed I’m kind of a book nerd. I love to read and so I need lots of storage for the books I keep around. This shelf would fit in well for the more modern or unique home décor style. Still very cost effective and would create great storage.
104. Staggered Planter
I love keeping lots of plants around my house (inside and out.) So having fun, creative planters to go with is usually a must. I think it adds a touch of who you are as a homeowner and displays beautiful life that adds beauty to any home. This planter is certainly unique with its staggered design.
105. Hanging Garden
Do you live in a place with not much yard? Or even an apartment? Well, don’t let that stop you from raising your own flowers and veggies. With this hanging planter you could grow quite a few gorgeous flowers and certainly enough vegetables to take some of the weight off of your grocery budget.
106. Pallet Pumpkins
I love these pallet pumpkins. I’m always looking for unique center pieces during the fall. I believe I have found them for this upcoming year. To make it even better, they can be made very inexpensively. That is always a much needed break my wallet loves.
107. Garden Lounger
These garden loungers would be a great place to relax on warmer days. They also add a great splash of color to your yard. I love how warm and inviting they appear for guests.
108. Laptop Riser
Do you work off of your laptop a lot? I do too. But when you are sitting at a desk it is often nice to hook up a wireless keyboard. In those instances, it is nice to have something to lift your laptop to eye level. Well, pallets can help with that too.
109. Kitchen Shelf
Let’s face it, most of us could always use extra storage in the kitchen. This unique little shelf can certainly help with that. It has plenty of space to hang whisks, measuring cups, and even to store coffee cups. It would be neat to use it as part of a coffee station.
110. Kitchen Cabinet
I love the whole concept of open shelving. I love this cabinet that much more because it has a great space to hang coffee cups underneath it. So if you like the older style (which is suddenly becoming modern) then this cabinet might be your cup of tea.
111. Fruit Basket
I don’t know about you, but I never seem to have enough room to store my fresh fruit out on the counter. You always want it there so everyone will eat it (and not forget about it while it rots.) But you can’t just pile it on the counter because it will roll everywhere. This basket with two shelves is inexpensive and stops the rolling factor.
112. Pallet Desk
I love the simple design of this desk. It looks to be something that even an amateur carpenter could pull off with great success. It also looks as though it would be a great desk space and have lots of storage too.
113. Pallet Shed
We purchased our shed. And after spending a small fortune, if I had it to do over again, we would’ve built it. The reason being you can build for so much less than you can buy. With this shed, you get lots of storage and it can be created out of free building materials. That is awesome.
114. Garden Tool Organizer
I am stoked about this idea. The reason is because I hang old pallets on our building and use it for storage for old pieces of sheet metal and things of that nature. This just gives me one more idea to use a hanging pallet to keep organization around our home.
115. Planter Box
Do you always need planter boxes? My mother-in-law was once like that. She could grow practically anything and did. So it left her constantly searching for ways to keep her flowers displayed and organized. This is a great option for that and inexpensive too.
116. Outdoor Table
This table is amazing. It has a space to grow fresh herbs in the middle. It also offers a lot of seating space. If you have a large family or like to put together large gatherings then this could be a great table to meet those needs.
117. Bench And Table
These are more great outdoor ideas for very little money and created from pallets. This bench and table is a great place to relax or enjoy a quiet cup of coffee outdoors on a beautiful, warm day. With such a small price tag you have no reason not to enjoy your outdoor space.
118. Murphy Planting Station
I love things that are there when you need them but can be easily stored when you don’t. Well, this planting station is one of those items. You just unfold it when you need it to plant and then fold it back onto the wall when you are finished.
119. Compost Bin
Do you like to create your own compost? It certainly helps your garden while taking away the expense of gardening. But a lot of compost bins are super expensive. Well, this one is beautiful; looks as though it’ll do the trick; and inexpensive.
120. Bike Trailer
Do you live in a city where it is easier to get around on a bike than by car? Well, that is awesome for the environment and your health. It just makes it hard to take a lot with you. No worries after you see this idea. You can haul just about anything after attaching this trailer to your bike.
121. Sled
Do you live where the weather is really cold in the winter? Do you get lots of snow? Don’t waste them sitting indoors. Make this awesome sled and get outside and enjoy snow days like you did as a kid.
